A bit of history ... from Fromentin to Bouamama ...

The FROMENTIN high school was, in Algiers, a remarkable "pilot" high school for girls, at a time when there was no gender mix in classes.

The DESCARTES High School closed its doors in June 1988 and gave birth to BOUAMAMA High School.

The Lycée DESCARTES (named after the French philosopher and mathematician Rene Descartes of the 17th) .. ex-boarding school for girls FROMENTIN (named after Eugène FROMENTIN painter and French novelist of the 19th century and amateur of the Saharan world) is an establishment like no other ..Loaded history, its main building The Splendid was in fact, a hotel, later integrated to the pavilions of interns. He sheltered the French general government before independence. His teaching although based on French culture was quite universal because addressing students from all walks of life (children expatriates diplomats technical cooperatives of Algerian executives etc ..). Contrary to popular belief, we taught Arabic ... I had (during the 70s) two teachers (French) of Arabic Mr Fricaud and Mr Grill .. His remarkable architecture, its appreciable extent, its abundant vegetation and its mysterious undergrounds (actually shelters) contribute to its legend and make it an unforgettable memory for those who frequented it.
